A celebration of flowers and music is on display across the bank holiday weekend in the form of 29 flower arrangements.

Taking place at the Central Methodist Church in Helston, every available space is filled with an arrangement for the Music in Bloom flower festival.

They depict different types of music, such as tribal, jazz and percussion, along with various songs and hymns, while some are inspired by the town’s own organisations such as Helston Town Band, created in memory of late Helston business owner Wesley Bowden.

A number of the arrangements are in memorium, with other residents of the town remembered including Henry Stone, the son of Blue Anchor publicans Simon and Kim.

Over the course of the weekend there are also guest performances, with the Pentire Singers performing this afternoon and Helston Town Band playing on Sunday at 2.30pm. This will be followed by Songs of Praise at 6pm.

This afternoon also saw flower-themed crafts for children and this evening Helston historian Martin Matthews will give a talk from 7.30pm called Up and Down Town.

The festival was officially opened yesterday by Julian Waring of the Fishermen’s Mission.

It opens for visitors again tomorrow at 12 noon until 6pm and can also be visited on Monday between 10am and 6pm.

There is free entry, although donations are welcomed as the event is raising money for the ongoing work of the church in the community and to help cover its expenses, with the Coinagehall Street building costing almost £2,000 a week to keep open.
