There is chaos on Helston’s roads this lunchtime due to traffic light works causing long delays and vehicles trying to find alternative routes as a result.

The town is now into the fifth day of three-way queues on the Penzance Road and at St Johns, while work is carried out on the traffic lights at the junction near Lidl.

The existing lights are being removed, with new signals put back in their place.

In the meantime, three-way temporary lights have been set up – causing traffic to be at a standstill stretching back almost to the Spar roundabout on the Helston side and past the garage at Sithney Common Hill coming from the Penzance direction.

As a result, some motorists are trying to find alternative routes through the town’s adjoining roads, which are proving too narrow to cope with the volume.

This includes at St Johns, where there is a steady stream of traffic attempting to circumnavigate the queues by cutting up Almshouse Hill to the town centre – and due to parked cars reducing the width to one lane are coming face to face with vehicles trying the same thing in the opposite direction.

The road works are due to be in place throughout the weekend and into the start of next week.
