THE Green Party has announced its list of candidates for south west England – and two of the six candidates are from Cornwall.

Topping the list is Molly Scott Cato, who has represented the region as an MEP since 2014 and is standing on a pro-European platform.

A prominent figure in the campaign for a People’s Vote on any Brexit deal, Molly said she was also pointing to her record of action at European level on climate change, environmental protection and tax justice.

The two Cornwall Greens on the list, Tom Scott from Falmouth and Karen La Borde from Truro, have been campaigning at local level.

Karen has been one of the driving forces in persuading town and parish councils and Cornwall Council to declare a climate emergency, while Tom has been visible in the People’s Vote campaign in Cornwall and beyond – his anti-Brexit versions of various sea shanties recently featured on the national news being sung by large crowds of protestors at Westminster.

Karen said: “Over the last few months I’ve been working hard to raise awareness of the climate emergency that is an immediate threat to us all – and this means taking serious action at every level, from town and parish councils to the EU.

"Only the Green Party has policies that match the scale and urgency of the crisis. With the powerful Green group in the European Parliament, Molly has done great work to press for more ambitious CO2 reduction targets, as well as on other serious environmental threats such as plastics and bee-killing pesticides.

"We need more Green MEPs like her.”

Tom said: “A lot of people who voted Leave in Cornwall in 2016 are now well aware that they were lied to, and that no version of Brexit on offer is anything like what was promised back then by Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson.

"People can see that Theresa May’s deal doesn’t have any advantages over our current full membership of the EU, and that a no-deal Brexit would be catastrophic for businesses, farmers and jobs in Cornwall. The Green Party makes no bones about it: we want to keep our membership and to play a positive role at the heart of EU decision-making.”

Tom is a lecturer, writer and editor based in Falmouth, and recently presented a report he wrote on social media and disinformation at both the House of Commons and the EU Parliament.

Karen said that running a successful small business from her home near Truro had given her an understanding of the challenges faced by the small and medium-sized enterprises that make up a large part of Cornwall’s economy.

A Crowdfunder page for the campaign to re-elect Molly Scott Cato has also been launched.
