An electrical assistant who works for Mylor Yacht Harbour has been awarded the UK's Newly Certificated Electronics Technician of the Year 2018 after a 100 percent pass rate in her exams.

The award took Rebekah (Bekx) Hancock by surprise when it was presented at a British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association conference.

She said: "Winning was a complete surprise - and it has totally taken me aback as it’s hard to compare my progress to anyone on a similar path to mine. I try my best and have found a real interest in this line of work and this seems to have paid off.

“It reflects the dedication and hard work I have put into a dramatic career change in the past year and half and also the amazing support I have had from the Mylor Yacht Harbour team who have believed in me and have given me all the knowledge and help to get me to this position.”

The 27-year-old has been training and working with Mylor's Marine Team for the past eighteen months, having originally studied and trained as an Outdoor Education Instructor.

This particular BMEEA award was sponsored by Raymarine, one of the world’s foremost marine electronics firms, for whom Mylor Yacht Harbour is a certified service and sales dealer for their state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems.

Mylor has long prided itself on nurturing new talent within its Marine Team of master craftsmen and technicians who have the expertise to match any vessel – ancient or modern – from re-building or restoring classic yachts to the complete refurbishment and repowering of Cornish fishing boats and other high tech water craft.

MYH Managing Director Neil Salter says, “I’m delighted that Bekx has won this award which is a testament to the effort she has put in to gain her skills and integrate herself as a valuable member of the Electronics Engineering Team at Mylor Yacht Harbour. We are very proud of her and what she has achieved.”
