Falmouth saw a surge of 363 per cent more people carrying out internet searches on the town during the recent heatwave.

According to figures released by Cornish digital marketing and technology agency Everest Media, searches for Cornish beaches and resorts saw a massive spike during July.

Falmouth had the highest year-on-year percentage increase, up 363 per cent on the same period in 2017.

While only up 4.8 per cent year-on-year, Newquay had the highest amount of searches numerically, although the exact figure is not given in the research.

Specific Cornish beaches also saw a boost in internet traffic, with the most searched for during the heatwave including Kynance Cove near The Lizard, up 118 per cent year-on-year, Porthcurno (up 84 per cent), Sennen Cove (up 42.8 per cent) and Perranporth (up 32 per cent), while Gwithian (up 200 per cent) and Godrevy (up 100 per cent) saw some of the biggest percentage rises.

It comes just days after Visit Cornwall urged people to visit other beaches apart from Kynance and Porthcurno, saying the roads in these areas could not cope with the demand.

Head of tourism Malcolm Bell encouraged visitors to try one of the other 400 beaches that Cornwall has to offer.
