Despite the rain the 73rd Trewennack Horticultural Show on Saturday was well supported by both exhibitors and the public.

There was the added attraction of Breage Band playing during the afternoon, after the show was opened by former Helston mayor Gillian Geer and before the prizes and cups were presented by Jane Drew.

There were almost 1,000 entries from both adults and children and, for the fourth year, the show included the Inter-Schools Challenge. This year the trophy was won by Trannack School, with pupil Maisie collecting it on behalf of her fellow pupils.

Visitors were presented with an array of home baking, which, as now expected at Trewennack Show, was of a very high standard, including in the preserve section.

The number of entries in the fruit and vegetable sections was lower than usual but this was due in part to the weather this season. The standard continued to be high, with much friendly rivalry among the growers, while the flowers provided a colourful and perfumed backdrop.

The egg section continued to be popular, with a large number of entries, and Roger Thomas who grew up in the village was the judge.

The floral art section proved particularly well supported this year, while the artwork section attracted a number of new exhibitors.

There was also good support for the children's classes.

Refreshments were served in the chapel hall by a willing team of helpers led by Maureen Haywood.

Show chairman John Strike thanked the committee for the work they put in to making another successful show and the judges for giving their time to support it.
