Police officers have received awards for their bravery, skill and commitment to the job.

Detective Sergeant Allen Jordan, who is based at Falmouth and Helston, received the Bolitho Staff Trophy for Officer of the Year.

The award is for demonstrating all round qualities with proven outcome for their work and who leads by example to colleagues.

In the past year Det Sgt Jordan has excelled managing to overcome numerous challenges to maintain a high level of public service.

He has led his team to many notable successes securing significant convictions for offences ranging from burglary to drugs supply and, as deputy senior investigating officer, for an armed robbery of a jewellers in Truro when £1m worth of jewellery was stolen.

A testimonial by Devon and Cornwall Police read: "He positively leads his team, inspiring them and displays focused determination alongside the emotional intelligence to understand and support his staff often putting the needs of the pubic and his team before his own."

Sgt Paul Kelly received a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation for his courage and bravery.

The officer was called to B&Q in Penryn after a shoplifter pulled out a knife and threatened to stab staff when they challenged him.

Sgt Kelly told him to raise his hands in the air but as the officer approached, the man went to his jacket pocket. The officer feared he was going to pull out the knife so tried to incapacitate him with captor spray, and eventually managed to restrain him on the ground.

Despite this the man continued to try to get into his pocket but Sgt Kelly managed to handcuff him before finding a large knife in his pocket.

The offender was on licence and recalled to prison.

PC Andy Mulhern and PCSO Phillip Graham received a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation for acting quickly and professionally to save a motorist’s life when they dealt with a collision in the Truro area.

PC Mulhern carried out lifesaving first aid whilst PCSO Graham used a fire extinguisher to make the area safe for the injured motorist and his colleague.

Both officers then began CPR on him, continuing to do so when further support arrived.

Eleanor Richards from Falmouth received the annual Police Cadet Award after being chosen from 200 cadets.

Eleanor is described by Devon and Cornwall Police as "a keen and enthusiastic member of the Falmouth unit and is quick to help and encourage others using her excellent communication skills to good effect."

She has been Falmouth Mayor’s Cadet for the last year and promoted the Cadets to the local council and wider community. She has had an active part in the Cop Car project and mentors another cadet who needs extra support.

Eleanor will represent the Community Police Cadets at special events across the county and assist the High Sheriff, Mr Young-Jamieson, with charitable causes.

Commander for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly police area, Chief Superintendent James Pearce said: “I am very proud and privileged to have these officers working here in Cornwall. The recipients of these awards are just some examples of how much good work goes on by police from across the area.

"I would like to thank all my officers and staff for the incredible good work they do for the good of the local community. I would also like to thank the local community for the invaluable support they give to the police.”
