The Golden Globe race fleet held a parade of sail today, the 50th anniversary of Sir Robin Knox Johnston’s departure from Falmouth to become the first man to sail around the world on his own.

Participants then set off for a warm up race to Sables D’Ollone in France with Sir Robin himself firing the starting cannon from his famous yacht Suhaili.

Mayor of Falmouth Grenville Chappel said: “It’s amazing to think it was 50 years ago - it seems only yesterday - that Falmouth welcomed Sir Robin Knox-Johnston back into port after his incredible and historic sailing achievement, one that captured the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world.

“His exploits then and subsequent, have inspired many across the UK and beyond to get out on the water, take up sailing or indeed undertake their own adventures.

“It certainly made an indelible mark on Falmouth’s community and we are thrilled to see Sir Robin and his legendary yacht Suhaili back in town.”

The Sunday Times Golden Globe race was first held in 1968 and was the first of its kind, challenging sailors to sail around the world on their own.

The race was controversial as most of the participants failed to finish, with one even committing suicide after attempting to fake the voyage.

This year, a second race will be held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Golden Globe. Participants are restricted to using equipment and crafts similar to the one Sir Robin used in 1968, with no mobile phones or satellite navigation allowed.
