Visitors to some of Cornwall’s most iconic beauty spots are being reminded to think before they flush this summer.

Colourful posters urging loo users to flush only the 3Ps – pee, paper and poo – are being displayed on the back of public toilet doors at some of Cornwall’s most popular and Blue Flag beaches.

Sue James, Cornwall Council cabinet member for environment and public protection, said: “Cornwall has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

"It’s important that the millions of visitors every year follow these simple rules about flushing to protect our beaches and keep them pollution free and beautiful for future generations to enjoy. The message is clear – if everyone thinks before they flush it will make a real difference to our beaches this summer.”

The council has teamed up with South West Water to produce and install the ‘Love Your Loo’ posters as part of the BeachWise partnership to promote the beautiful beaches and clean bathing waters.

The initiative is to remind beach-goers that everyone has a part to play to prevent sewer blockages and flooding, which can be caused by people flushing baby wipes, hygiene wipes, moist toilet tissue, cleaning wipes, cleansing pads and sanitary products.

Alan Hyde, South West Water’s head of community relations, said: “Every year we deal with around 8,500 blocked sewers across our region. Blocked sewers can cause flooding and pollution, which we all want to avoid at our beaches and beauty spots.

“The Love Your Loo campaign encourages everyone to play their part in protecting their local environment by only flushing pee, paper and poo.”
