English Heritage is looking for new recruits to join its team of volunteers at Pendennis Castle in Falmouth this spring.

As part of a brand new interpretation project at the coastal fortress, English Heritage is recruiting a team of around 70 new volunteers at the castle. New volunteers could be part of the castle gun crew, lead visitors on guided tours, be a team co-ordinator, or become a costumed interpreter when they sign up to one of the varied roles available.

The castle will be holding recruitment open days for would-be volunteers to find out more on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27.

Based throughout the castle and grounds, the team of volunteers will help visitors to get the most out of their visit to Pendennis. As well as providing a warm and friendly welcome, volunteers will help bring the castle’s history to life with tours and costumed interpretation.

A friendly, enthusiastic manner is a must – as is a love of talking to new people. The new recruits will join a team of existing volunteers and staff, and gain invaluable experience of working at an important historic attraction. Whether you can offer just a couple of days a month, or a more regular commitment, English Heritage wants to hear from you.

Wendy Amer, manager of Pendennis Castle, said: “I’m delighted we can add to our brilliant team of volunteers as part of the new project at Pendennis Castle. Whether you want to meet new people, make the most of your skills and learn new ones, or indulge a life-long interest in heritage, the castle is a wonderful place to volunteer.

"We have some really unique opportunities on offer – if you’ve ever wanted to wear a historical costume, lead visitors on tours around hidden areas of a castle, or help out with our daily noon-day gun firing, this could be your chance. I can’t wait to meet our new recruits at our open days.”

The recruitment open days will be an opportunity to meet the team, explore the castle and find out all about the new volunteer programme. Sessions will run at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm on both days, and sessions can be booked online.

As well as interpretation roles, the castle is also recruiting for administration and team co-ordinator volunteers. The new volunteers will take up their roles from Easter. Full details of all roles available are available online at english-heritage.org.uk/volunteering.
