Falmouth Police Cadets recently made the long journey to Rockingham in Corby to take part in the Greenpower International Kit Car Finals.

The cadets entered two cars along while the Falmouth Fire Station Fire Car team entered a third. All three made it through scrutineering and then competed and finished the race successfully as others lay broken down on the side lines.

The race is organised by Greenpower Trust with races up and down the country throughout the year. The local heats for Cornwall were held at RAF St Mawgan in June and then the final was held in Rockingham.

The kit car projects run by Falmouth’s local police and fire teams works with young people offering them support, team work, learning and engagement.

Falmouth police coordinator for the cop car project, community manager Ellie Grey, said: "I am so proud of the project led by our police cadets. We have reached out to 108 families over the last few years, not just locally but force wide.

"The cadets mentor others and give young people a sense of belonging whilst offering a safe environment for them to develop new skills as well as gain a better understanding of community life. We have seen a number of young people step away from antisocial behaviour and crime after being supported by this project as well as a better approach to their education."

She added: "A huge thanks must go to Devon and Cornwall police for their support of the project and for helping us with the cost of the coach for both police and fire teams. Thanks must also go to Falmouth mayor Grenville Chappel for his continued support of the project and for his donation of money to help towards the cost of food and refreshments for all the young people involved.

"This support from both police and council has meant there was no cost for the families for this event. It ensures everyone can take part and for me that is vital. All young people deserve the opportunity to experience new and wonderful things and this weekend has been just that."

Mr Chappel added: "It is a pleasure to support such a great project for the youth of Falmouth."
