One thing that you can almost confidently predict is that it will be windy on the airfield at St Mawgan - and it was when Mawnan WI visited the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Eighteen members braced themselves against the cool autumnal temperatures as they heard about the work of the pilot and paramedics and were able to take a close look at one of the two helicopters and all the medical equipment which is carried on board.

Members were shocked to hear that there is no government or lottery funding available to this vital local charity which covers the whole of the county and sometimes further afield. Three million pounds is needed every year to cover running costs and a replacement helicopter will be required in the next 12 months.

Members had raised funds for the air ambulance last year by holding their Garden Safari and also took a small donation with them on this visit. They hope to be able to organise a further fundraising event in the near future.

Although no-one would choose to be airlifted to hospital, Mawnan WI members left Cornwall Air Ambulance headquarters feeling reassured that should the need occur they would be in the hands of caring, expertly trained and brave professionals.
