Cornwall Council is celebrating the county's lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities by supporting this weekend's Cornwall Pride event in Newquay.

As well as proudly flying the rainbow flag at New County Hall in Truro leading up to and throughout the Pride weekend, representatives of the council will be at the fun and inclusive event to let people know about services, talk about opportunities in the council, and to show its support for the communities it serves.

Representatives from the council will join the parade, starting at noon on Saturday from Beach Road car park, and will be at The Killacourt for the family friendly Rainbow Fest in the afternoon.

The council’s registration service will be advising on licensed venues and support for anyone who may be planning a marriage or civil ceremony in stunning Cornwall.

The corporate equality and diversity team will be there to talk about the We Say No to Hate Crime campaign; #proud to be Cornish, and the LGBTQ+ Forum for public sector employees in Cornwall. They will also be showcasing some young people’s work on Coming Out.

Cornwall fire, rescue and community safety service will be on hand to talk about careers within the service with firefighters ready to share their experiences and give information on how to become an on-call firefighter. They will also be discussing domestic abuse with the message to “shOUT” about this important issue.

Representatives from the Phoenix Services will be there to talk about the range of professional courses and training they can provide on everything from fire safety, first aid and marine fire-fighting to running courses to increase confidence, motivation and skills of young people.

Julian German, deputy leader of Cornwall Council with responsibility for equality and diversity, said: “By taking an active role in the Pride event, we are proud to show our commitment to supporting diversity and improving inclusion within Cornwall. We want to set an example in all we do to support the whole community. Pride is a great event and I hope that everyone enjoys themselves.”
