Falmouth Week 2017 has been declared the biggest ever, attracting record crowds for events such as the Red Arrows, the music nights and fireworks, which brought community together for ten days of fun-filled entertainment.

An estimated 120,000 visitors came to Falmouth during the week, and sampled the very best the town has to offer. It all started with the Pink Wig Parade and continued with the carnival, professional stunt bikes, the Red Arrows, an impressive music line-up that included boyband Blue and BBC Radio 6’s Craig Charles, Science on the Square, Music on The Moor, fireworks sponsored by A&P, dragonboat racing and much more.

Falmouth Week sailing regatta is one of the largest in the South West with yachts from several classes including the Ancasta Champagne Race, Nelly’s Carrick Fleet and Greenbank Hotel Bay Fleet over seven days.

Town Team investment in a wide variety of additional shore-side activity, marketing and infrastructure in recent years, has enabled the week to grow significantly and attract thousands of visitors to the town from across the country.

Despite a damp start to the day, the fun day on Wednesday was the busiest yet. Over 40,000 people visited Falmouth creating a carnival atmosphere as activity including the Action Sports Tour, RNLI fun on the quay, art and entertainment on The Moor and of course The Red Arrows, brought colour to the town.

The Red Arrows display took place over the bay, bringing thousands to Falmouth’s beaches and coastline where they enjoyed panoramic views of the spectacle. The display was sponsored by Falmouth Town Council, Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth BID, Falmouth University, Fal River, The Royal Duchy Hotel and Harbour Lights.

On The Moor, the Creation Station and Falmouth Art Gallery ran daily free workshops for children, and Source FM coordinated a varied line-up of local musicians for daily afternoon entertainment. On Prince

of Wales Pier the Big Wheel gave stunning views over the town and harbour, and fairground rides ran on both sites.

The Pink Wig committee, made up of Emma Kent, Kath Stivey, Sue and Naomi Morant, Michelle Bray and Jay Wicks, were left astounded at the turn out for this year’s event which raised almost £21,000. After deductions, they hope to donate £17,000 to the Cornwall Breast Care Team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Breast Cancer Now.

Richard Gates, the town manager and chair of the Falmouth Week shoreside committee, said: “On behalf of the committee, we are really pleased with the huge success of the week. It all works well due to the co-operation and hard work behind the scenes both on and off the water.

"The events throughout the town from The Moor to the seafront were very well supported. I would like to say a big thank you to the sponsors and partners involved in the week and all the volunteers and committee who give up their time to support the town. Without their involvement, we simply would not be able to organise these wonderful festivals.”

Next year Falmouth Week will take place a little later, from August 10 to 19.
