As the sun sets on another Stithians Show organisers of the event are already looking forward to next year, with plans already underway.

The show, which is the largest one-day agricultural show in the region, features a wide range of agricultural activities and is designed to be fun for all the family.

Held on Monday, visitors to the show enjoyed the sunny weather as they perused the exhibitions, listened to live music, and enjoyed the new Members Pavilion.

Jenna Payne, show secretary, said: “We were really lucky with the weather, we had a great forecast for the week but on the day it was even better.

“It was pretty busy all day, with people queueing at the gates.

“The highlight of the day was The Steelers from Treviglas School. They’re a 25-piece steel band and the sound went all round the show ground, they generated a tremendous crowd.”

But music wasn’t the only highlight of the show, as once again the popular grand parade took place, showcasing the prize-winning sheep and cattle.

In the sheep category, B Roth was crowned breed champion for Suffolk, and JR Osborne breed champion for Charollais.

Jenna continued: “We had everything from horses to cattle and goats. The goat section was incredible.

“Poultry was slightly down this year, but we didn’t know if we would have a poultry section due to avian flu, so we were very lucky to have a poultry show this year.

“The Young Farmers were up big time this year, there were more than double the amount of last year. We’re going to grow by next year and offer more to them, and have more opportunities for them.”

This year the show launched the new Sunflower Trail, which took visitors to new areas of the show to highlight learning opportunities, such as gig rowing, milling flour, or cow milking.

“Education is at the core of what we do, and young people are the future, so that’s who we are targeting,” said Jenna.

“We had at least six schools attend, they have already contacted us and gave some great feedback - that’s been a tremendous highlight for us.”

And as the festival drew to a close, Jenna issued heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to ensure the day was a success.

She said: “It’s a real team effort here, we have so many volunteers who work so hard to make it happen. We couldn’t do it without them, it could not happen. They are the back bone of this show, without a doubt.”
