St Keverne Village Hall sprang into bloom on Saturday as it was filled with the sights and smells of the spring flower show.

This year the show was opened by Peggy Thompson, who has a long association with the parish having first arriving in 1940 as an evacuee.

She has been a long-time supporter of both village shows, entering and serving on the committee, and thanked the present day committee for their endeavours, as well as the people who came to view and to enter, without whom there would be no point.

Peggy then presented the trophies, and gave a pot plant to outgoing committee member Julia Nunn for her services to the show.

The show enjoyed great support from the Tonks family, with Joe and Rose both winning cups in their age groups and Kyra winning the Britton cup for her cut flowers and foliage exhibits. She also had a share in the June Curtin Cup for the spring produce section.

Committee member David Endean said: "Many thanks must go to Kate Phillips and Sandra Birchmore whose efforts in running after-school clubs resulted in so many entries in the children’s section it certainly made the snooker room look bright and cheery.

"Charlie Coates who has many titles within the show but generally brings the show together said that he was particularly pleased to see so many first time entrants, this led to Andrew O’Neill winning the Newcomer Tankard for the most points for a gent entering the show for the first time. Mary Roberts won the ladies equivalent with all her entries in the flowers and pot plants this led to her having a share in two other cups. Alas she was busy in the afternoon and her place was filled by her husband Dennis."

The show also had a nice display of floral arrangements from miniatures through elaborate buttonholes to larger displays of spring flowers. Maggie Weaver won the Falconer Cup for her Easter themed arrangement in a large class and Jill Thomas won the Hagenbach Cup for her delicate miniature arrangement, while David Endean won most points in the class.

The show had more daffodils than last year, despite a milder winter leading to earlier blooms and an early influx of slugs and snails. The Harry London Cup was awarded to Tim Basher for his vase of mixed daffodils, while the Jonny Trewin Cup and the Mabel Basher Cup were won by David Endean.
