Crowds gathered at The Blue Anchor on Saturday when singers from all over the county arrived to celebrate Henry Trengrouse Day.

The event was organised by Anthony Gilbert, Ruth Venner and Jim Venner, and throughout the day people heard the life and history of one of Helston's most famous residents.

Henry Trengrouse, who died in 1854, was the inventor of the life-saving 'Rocket' apparatus, an early form of the Breeches Buoy, and campaigned to abolish the tradition of burying the victims of shipwrecks in common graves in unconsecrated ground.

During the day the gathering sang sea shanties, Cornish folk songs and favourites, lifting the spirits of all in attendance.

There was standing room only at the pub, where the young and old alike gathered to pay tribute to the historic figure.
