Some of Falmouth School’s able and talented students proved they are just that recently when they took part in Tomorrow’s Engineers Lego robot competition and came out in first place overall.

The students had spent the last few weeks in sessions working on various aspects of the challenge to prepare for the contest, which had three main components. The first part tasked them with designing a robot that could complete a series of seven space missions within tight time constraints.

The second was a research project based around some of the real-life problems that astronauts face on a day-to-day basis and the third was a challenge to test their teamwork.

Students faced fierce competition from other schools. Underneath the shadow of Concorde in the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, the Falmouth students had their first attempt at the space missions, completing two tasks. After some quick adjustments from Eddie the robot students did even better during their second attempt and managed to complete five tasks.

The Falmouth success continued, with a presentation of research on fuel cells by Tegan Underwood that scored highly. The teamwork challenge went even better still meaning the Falmouth team had a good chance heading into the results and presentations of awards. Team ‘Falbot’ were crowned the highest overall scorers in the teamwork challenge and came away with the cup as winners.

Judy King, the Able and Talented lead at Falmouth School, said: “Well done to all of the robot engineers, software programmers and scientific researchers who were part of team ‘Falbot.’ The students worked incredibly hard and were a credit to their school.”
