The Victoria Inn, at Threemilestone and the local Stafford family have raised £10,478 for the Cornish Heart Unit fund from their third annual charity golf day.

More than 144 golfers, consisting of 42 teams and businesses, teed off in near perfect weather conditions at Truro Golf Club, battling it out to win some great prizes including a brand new BMW Series sponsored by Ocean BMW, Falmouth.

The day started with a Kernow Independent networking breakfast then swung into the golf tournament before more evening activities. The golf players also enjoyed being interview and filmed playing and being broadcast live worldwide via the Cornwall Channel.

Truro man Nigel Stafford approached the Victoria Inn back in 2013 after suffering a near fatal heart attack to discuss fundraising ideas to show his gratitude for the care and support he received in the Cornwall Heart Unit. Three years on, the golf day event is going from strength to strength.

Nigel said: “The charity is close to my heart if you’ll excuse the pun, so anything we do to raise funds for such a fantastic cause and amazing unit makes a huge difference to Cornwall. This year we set ourselves an ambitious target of topping last year’s total of £8,000 and I am genuinely touched by the generosity of all those people who entered a team or sponsored an event, as well as those that donated and bid on auction prizes.”

Non-golfers also enjoyed the day, joining the charity event in the evening which consisted of an auction, compered by Philip Buddell. One lot alone, executive Premiership football tickets, raised £1,300, and the silent raffle exceeded all expectations.

Victoria Inn director, Justin Barnett, said: "It’s been a great event and we are delighted with the response from all of our guests who have dug deep to support the charity. Raising over £10,000 on the day, less than 11 months after the last event, is truly amazing. We could not have put the event on without the support and generosity of many of friends and suppliers, who every year step up and deliver with amazing lots for our auction."

Jessica Burgess, public fundraising manager for Royal Cornwall Hospital Charity, said: “Thank you so much to The Victoria Inn, Threemilestone and the Stafford family for holding this event in aid of the charity and to all of those who gave so generously. The funds for this event will go straight into the Cornish Heart Unit Fund and will assist in kitting out a new outpatient ward for the cardiology team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.”

The team at The Victoria have raised more than £22,500 over three years for the Stafford family’s chosen causes.
