Community radio station Source FM has a problem - only 20 per cent of its presenters are female, but that could soon change.

Ever since the first day of broadcasting in 2009 the station has been heavily dominated by male volunteers, mostly with big record collections. However, in 2016 Source FM is making a special effort to change.

It is inviting any women, and girls, from the local area who have even the slightest interest in radio to attend a special "women only" open day at the station between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, September 10.

Those attending will have the chance to meet existing female Source FM presenters, talk to experienced BBC female journalists and tour the studios to see just how easy it is to make interesting exciting radio shows. And, you don’t need to bring anything with you except for your enthusiasm.

Val Baker who is a presenter on Source FM and a member of it executive board, said: “I know I’m biased but women do some of the most interesting shows on Source FM and also have some of the most interesting things to say in general. To be good on radio you have to be a natural speaker, anyone can learn the technology that’s the easy part, but not everybody has something interesting to say.”

Source FM is especially keen to hear from women who might be interested in developing a newly rejuvenated relationship with The Poly which has a series of interesting performances and talks coming up in the autumn that Source FM is hoping to cover. The station bosses are also interested in receiving proposals about any subject such as health, wellbeing and creative writing or mechanics, mathematics and engineering.
