Flushing schoolgirl Sacha Fowles has become the first winner of the village Poetry Prize which was created in memory of Maureen Jackett, who was a Cornish bard and a prolific writer of poetry.

Former postman and husband of Maureen, Graham, presented Sacha with the trophy at the school's annual prize giving afternoon last week.

The Flushing School Poetry Prize, which is to be an annual award, was only made possible through the work of Flushing Arts who organised the development of the unique prize. Two local businesses also very kindly donated their time and resources to make it happen.

These were Gill Herbert and Emma West who designed the laser cut trophy image through their company Pogofandango, which makes bespoke cards and is based in Penryn, and Kitty Sandy, a former pupil at the school, who runs The Banana Shed Framing Company, which is based in Flushing.

Mr Jackett and his daughter, Morwenna Bennett, visited the school last week, along with Pam Rowan, chair of Flushing Arts; Gill, Emma and Kitty, when he presented the trophy to Sacha.

"Everyone has been absolutely delighted with the outcome and it is a fitting memorial for Maureen Jackett," said a spokesman for Flushing Arts.
