Plans for new, purpose built headquarters for 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts on land next to the children's play area at Lambs Lane, have been submitted to Cornwall Council.

Although the new single storey building would primarily be used by the sea scouts, it is also envisaged that an office within it could be used as a meeting room by the local MP, the police and other local community groups.

"This will hopefully reinforce a sense of security on site and encourage locals to be able to use the building and take advantage of the services on offer," say the Koha Architects in the application's design statement.

The building would have a footprint of 20 by 8.5 metres and would be accompanied by six parking spaces and a small concrete terrace for outdoor dining which will incorporate picnic benches. The development is earmarked for an area of land below Pengelly Place, which will be screened by the existing trees.

It is thought the building would typically be used between 9am and 10pm and no alcohol would be served on the site. The outside areas would mainly be used for outdoor barbecues, scout exercises, camping and general social activities.

An external store would be provided and shipping containers are being considered for this, although other options are also being looked at.

The architects say in conclusion: "Our intention is that the building creates a safe place where the scouts and other members of the public can be inspired and enter into everyday adventure and challenge in a fun and friendly environment.

"A key emphasis in the scout brand is to make a positive impact in the local community and we hope that this design will make a contribution towards that."

Falmouth Town Council has already received a presentation from the sea scouts outlining their proposals and the actual application is expected to go before the council's planning committee on August 1 before being determined by Cornwall Council.
