The bunting has been packed away and normality returned to Mawgan following the excitement of another successful Feast Week.

Feast Sunday started a little earlier this year with a tea party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, after which the traditional thanksgiving service at the war memorial was held accompanied by Gweek Silver Band, who subsequently entertained in the recreation hall.

The musical theme continued on Monday evening when the Trengilly Singers sang through the centuries at Mawgan Church, with guitarist Richard Collington the guest soloist.

On Tuesday it was the turn of the children, who enjoyed a delicious tea and sports.

Wednesday provided an opportunity to exercise the little grey cells at the charity quiz, which proved a very closely fought contest between nine teams, ending in a tie between The Lobsters and La La Land. Money raised from this event will be divided equally between Mawgan Church and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The weather on Thursday was unusually pleasant for the annual parish walk and feast bingo on Friday attracted lots of people, both from within and without the village.

Feast Week reached its climax on Saturday in usual style when a mixture of activities, games and food was on offer at the recreation ground. A car boot sale was in operation from noon and Julian Rand officially opened the proceedings at 1.30pm, followed by the children of Garras Owlets Pre-school and Garras School singing a selection of songs.

There was plenty on offer to entertain the whole family including a raffle and a variety of games, such as bowling for a chicken, hoop-la and a coconut shy.

Highlights out on the field included a display of gleaming vintage cars and tractors - including an an E-type Jaguar and an Alvis that had raced at Brooklands - and the appearance of shire horses William and Sampson, brought along by Ron White of Leedstown.

Refreshments were provided by a team of hardworking tea ladies serving pasties and homemade cakes and cream teas, with the Ship Inn providing a beer tent and barbecue.

Inside the recreation hall the walls were bright with artwork from pupils of Garras School, which was judged by Lesley Roberts and Lucy Wandless, who will take over as executive headteacher for Garras, Godolphin and Sithney schools from September. The artwork competition was sponsored by Glebe Hall Cottages.

Parish council chairman Kevin Roberts said: “It has been a really good week, with plenty of variety, activities for everyone, good weather and, of course, we were able to start the week last Sunday with a tea party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.

"I must thank everyone who has worked so hard both in the months leading up to the week and during the week to make it such a success.”
