A poem by ten-year-old Lucy Bates, a pupil at Mawnan School, has been sent to the Queen after it was chosen to represent all the Rotary Clubs in Cornwall and Devon.
Children were tasked with coming up with a poem to celebrate the monarch's 90th birthday which resulted in seven being submitted by pupils from two local schools. Those who put pen to paper were Nancy Roberts, Benjy and Louis, Toby P and Lucy from Mawnan School, and Emsee Wyatt, Sean Raistrick and Bethany Dryden, from St Francis School in Falmouth.
Each district in Rotary was asked to select one poem to go to the Queen. District 1175 (Devon and Cornwall) chose Lucy's which means it was included in a book with the winning entries from the 25 other districts around Great Britain and Ireland and sent to Buckingham Palace.
Lucy will eventually receive a certificate acknowledging her achievement. Her mum, Helen, told Falmouth Rotary Club: "Lucy was very excited about winning for your district, and quite often wonders if the poem made the queen laugh.”
