A kayaker spent 25 minutes in the water off Porthallow on Sunday after falling from his boat and being unable to get back on.

Falmouth Coastguard was alerted at around 4.45pm following a 999 call reporting a person in the water in Falmouth Bay, and both Falmouth lifeboats and the Porthoustock coastguard cliff rescue team were sent to the scene.

The inshore lifeboat arrived on scene at 5pm to find the dive boat Celtic Kitten had recovered the man - who had been wearing a bouyancy aid - from the water, and both the casualty and his kayak were taken to the shore. But at around 5.20pm he started showing signs of hypothermia.

A Falmouth RNLI spokesperson said: "Considering the remoteness of the location the decision was taken to transfer the casualty from the beach to the all weather lifeboat and to take him back to Falmouth.

"Once on board the All Weather Lifeboat the casualty was transferred into the warm wheelhouse where he was treated by the lifeboat crew who are trained in casualty care and thanks to their actions his condition was stabilised."

Once at Falmouth lifeboat station the casualty was assessed by paramedics before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
