Penryn's May pole will return to the Glasney Valley on Sunday as the town's annual May Day celebrations kick off a packed calendar of events celebrating the town's 800th aniversary.

Organised for the fifth year by voluntary group the Glasney Greenspace Regeneration Project, this years’ event will have an 'old school’ theme.

A parade led by folk band Bagas Crowd will leave Glasney Field at 10am, with everyone invited to take part, before moving through the Glasney Valley and on to the May pole erected at Doorstep Green, under the viaduct.

After the dancing there will be a variety of traditional games, including coconut shy, through the hole, splat the rat, and a new variation on hoopla, called POOPla, plus a chance to take part in a duck race on the Antron River and maybe even a tug-o-war.

Penryn's very own Rebel Brewing Co will have a well stocked bar including award winning ales and local caterer Falspice will be offering a wide selection of pies including vegetarian options.

Members of the Dead Ryners Society, a group organised by Chaz Wenmoth to celebrate Penryn characters over the last 800 years, will also be making their debut.
