From smoothie making to street surfing, children at Falmouth Primary Academy enjoyed a fit and fun week of activities aimed at promoting a healthy attitude to life.

Last week the school ran a wellbeing week, a programme of events aimed at encouraging pupils to think about what they eat and what they do, as well as showing them tasty new recipes and interesting new sports and games to enjoy.

Throughout the week a stream of volunteers visited the school, showcasing sports including basketball, hockey, and shinty, as well as street surfing and rocket ball.

The visiting shinty players were part of the Cornish team, including members who play for England, and they taught the children about the sport's old Cornish heritage. It is even hoped that the players might return to teach, and help the school join a local schools' mini-league.

Meanwhile members of Eden Food Services, who provide school dinners for Falmouth Primary, visited the pupils to discuss healthy eating and show them how to cook tasty and nutritious food.

They also had a chance to try their hand at making smoothies using a special bike-powered blender, meaning they really earned their reward.

Year 5 teacher Jackie Wall said the children had really embraced it," and year 5 pupil Joshua said the week had been "really, really fun."

He said: "I liked all the activities, especially street surfing, it was hard but I like to be challenged. I will probably get into new activities."
