The Cornish Pirates lent their support to Penlee RNLI’s fundraising appeal for its new boathouse at their match against Bedford Blues at the weekend.

Fundraisers from Penlee RNLI were at the game on Sunday collecting donations for their appeal to raise £200,000 towards the cost of a new lifeboat station. All money donated will go to the fundraising appeal.

Patch Harvey, coxswain of the Penlee lifeboat, said: "We’re fortunate to have a fantastic, longstanding relationship with the Cornish Pirates and we’re so grateful for their continued support."

The current station is 32-years-old and is no longer fit for purpose. Subject to planning permission, the new lifeboat station will provide much improved facilities for the crew including a larger crew changing and shower room, a dedicated mechanics workshop and a visitor attraction where Penlee’s proud heritage and sea safety information can be displayed.

The first floor will include a galley area and larger crew room where they can rest and get warm after a shout, a dedicated office and a separate training room. The training room will be available for use by groups in the local community working and training in the maritime area.

Phil Westren from the Cornish Pirates said: "Cornish rugby supporters and indeed ‘One and All’ in Cornwall truly appreciate the vital role played by the RNLI. Our community always responds to help where possible and there will surely be a strong desire to support this latest, very important fundraising appeal."

The match was sponsored by Jewson, which recently awarded the Penlee appeal £50,000 as part of its Building Better Communities fund.
