Events Square in Falmouth will be a riot of colour and flavours this bank holiday weekend, as the south west heat of the Great British Street Food Festival comes to town.

Visitors should expect something like a cross between a street market and a vintage car rally, as the festval serves up everything from waffles from a 1961 French fire engine to Italian Cuisine in a London double decker or Greek favourites from a horse box.

The event, which has free entry and will see Sharps brewery giving away 100 free half-pints to the first arrival every day, boasts will see the best street food vendors from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset go head to head to give customers the best grub on August 29, 30 and 31.

Among those taking part will be Croyde Bay, Devon based Lola’s Wings serving authentic New York style free range, organic chicken wings, pulled chicken sandwiches & more.

Started by Lauren, a native New Yorker and Si, from Devon, through their love of street food and festival going. They saw a gap in the market for authentic NY style chicken wings and set out to bring the best quality meat to the market and teamed up with Pipers’ Farm, just outside of Exeter to sell their properly free range, award winning meat.

Cornwall will have two entrants vying for the top accolade, with local crumpet company Truly Crumptious providing treats from their vintage caravan, while Inkie's Smokehouse cooks up barbecue delights, while Penryn's Shellfish Pig will be serving up be bringing the pulled pork.

Richard Johnson, founder of the awards, said: “Street food has been a massive trend abroad for years, from Bethlehem’s hole in the wall falafel shacks to Italy’s street pizza providers and the fish offerings on the Mandalay, but it’s only recently picked up force here in the UK. It’s a privilege to hold the south west heats in the gorgeous town of Falmouth. Falmouth is a foodie mecca, with so much culinary creativity and an abundance of quirky little eateries. We can’t wait to see what’s on offer in this phenomenal part of the country.”

he added: “People should come along this Bank Holiday weekend to Falmouth with a big appetite and eat all you can — we’ve asked traders to do special £3 tasters to help with the sharing."

There will also be live music from Universal Music, live newspaper reviews, a street food and beer matching experience, and Have I Got Foods For You, the festival’s take on the topical news quiz.

The winners of the regional heats are determined by votes, and will be announced on August 31 at 2pm.
