BBC Radio Cornwall’s weekend weather man John Notley breezed into the president’s chair at Helston Rotary Club for the 2015-16 year, succeeding Benny Vleminckx.

Benny presented John with his chain of office at the club, which has been established in the town for 58 years.

John Notley spent nearly 40 years in the meterological department of the Royal Navy, obtaining a BA degree in the process. He had joined the Navy at 16 from his childhood home in St Austell.

The last five years of his service were spent at the School of Meteorlogical and Oceanography instructing officers and ratings alike.

On leaving the Navy he was invited to join BBC Radio Cornwall to provide weekend weather forecasts, and there he has remained for 12 years, despite 3.45am starts to his sessions. He will be retiring from Radio Cornwall in August.

John joined Helston Rotary four years ago and has served the past two years as secretary of the club. He is married to Margaret with four children and lives on the outskirts of Helston.
