Specialist rescue equipment, sedatives and a lot of patience was needed to resuce a horse that had tumbled into a mine shaft near Camborne on Tuesday.

Fire and rescue crews were called to the site off North Roskear road just before 3.30pm after a call that  a horse which had fallen two metres into the top of a mine shaft.

Two appliances with ten firefighters from Camborne and Truro were mobilised, along with a crew from Penzance in a specialist Line Rescue appliance.

The animal was sedated by a vet to allow fire crews to work safely and to reduce any injuries.

A fire and rescue spokesman said that crews set up a tripod and line rescue equipment and cleared bracken and gorse away from the top of the shaft to allow better access before a tripod and a winch were put into action.

The horse was further sedated by the vet and two firefighters were committed to the shaft wearing line rescue equipment, with the horse then lifted from the top of the shaft to a safe location.
