Helston Town Council’s planning committee will tonight debate outline proposals for 480 homes on a 46 acre site off Clodgey Lane to the south-east of the town.

Plans for the site, which is referred to as HX2 in the Helston Framework consultation document and is currently used as agricultural land for grazing cattle, include affordable homes and access for bicycles, buses and pedestrians.

The application, from developer David Martin, has attracted almost 50 comments on Cornwall Council’s website, the majority of which are in favour of the proposals.

Elaine Barker says: “I strongly support this application. It is close to existing amenities, health, retail, education and leisure. It would sit and blend well into the setting proposed.

“There are already good transport links as access, and as such it would cause little inconvenience to road users during the development construction. It is making |use of an area that would marry up |well with existing developments and |provide much needed residential development for Helston.”

Jill White writes: “I support this application as I do feel that affordable housing is needed in Helston and this site is the closest to Helston and amenities.”

Others, though, have concerns. Stephen Frew says: “My concern is that there are |not enough amenities to accommodate |this size build in Helston. At the moment |our schools and doctors are full and 480 |new homes are only going to add to this situation. If these plans were to include these facilities I’m sure there would be |no worries or concerns with the proposed plans.”

Anna Taylor says: “If we really do need this amount of houses in Helston then this would be the obvious choice of area. However, assurances on flooding issues, pedestrian/vehicular access, local infrastructure support and aesthetics |would be needed to ensure that any development would be beneficial to the |area and not just make the developers plenty of money.”

Town councillors will get to have their say on the proposals and make a recommendation to Cornwall Council when they meet this evening (Wednesday).
