Devon and Cornwall Police are on the look out for new Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) – to fill anticipated induction course starting in June 2015.

The jobs are available forcewide, with the successful candidates becoming "an integral part of a neighbourhood team, providing a highly visible, approachable and known uniformed policing point of contact within the local neighbourhood".

With the force saying that this is an excellent opportunity for those individuals who wish to further their career within the police service.

A spokesman said: "You will seek to improve confidence and trust in the police service within neighbourhoods, by providing an accessible, quality service that reflects the policing needs of the local community. This will be achieved in various ways including providing a prominent uniformed presence in our neighbourhoods. We are also looking to further develop our local engagement via other media, particularly on the internet, such as the active use of social networking and community information sites. This will mean you may spend a proportion of your time within an office environment.

"The successful candidates will encourage positive involvement of partners and communities in identifying local policing and community safety priorities. By working together, you will provide a responsive approach to reducing and detecting crime, bringing offenders to justice and addressing incidents that matter most to local people. You will be expected to provide answers and be open and accountable to the community, improving peoples’ sense of personal safety and reducing their fear of crime.

PCSOs are required to work shifts and are mostly deployed between the hours of 8.00am and 10.00pm,working a shift pattern over 7 days, depending upon the area in which they work. Where required, you will be deployed on foot patrol in allocated areas.

The posts are subject to an enhanced level of security vetting (CTC) and as part of the recruitment process preferred candidates will be required to undertake a mandatory drugs test in order to identify any misuse of illegal drugs.

The fitness and swimming test will be a pass or fail and applicants will have one attempt at the test. No retakes will be offered for this process.

Successful applicants will be required to attend an eight week course at Police Headquarters, Exeter.
