One of the oldest women’s institutes in Cornwall has disbanded just a year after celebrating its 95th birthday.

Leedstown WI met recently to discuss closing the group, due to a lack of new and young members. It means that Leedstown WI no longer exists, although the suspension is for three years before it is made final.

As a result the WI could still be brought back, if there was sufficient interest and people to take it forward.

Funds are held by Cornwall Federation of Women’s Institutes and anyone interested in resurrecting the group can contact Betty Pollard, former secretary, on 01736 850272, or Sheila Goldsworthy, former president, on 01736 850266, who can advise them on how to proceed.

A spokesperson said: “Leedstown WI has played a huge part in the local community over the years, helping with many local projects, for example at the village school, in the village hall, in the playing field, and keeping the village clear of litter.

“It was responsible for the WI seat in the square, a welcome asset to walkers, and the tree at the entrance to Polglase Farm.

“It produced wonderful projects on the village, and it has discovered and written down much about its history.”

These documents are safely stored at the Cornwall Record Office, and can be viewed by researchers. For more information on this contact Ann Trevenen Jenkin on 01736 850332.

The group went out with a last hurrah, however, with a successful Christmas lunch and Christmas party attended by WI members from other neighbouring groups.

Some remaining members are transferring to other WIs such as Praze, Gwinear and Perranuthnoe, meaning their involvement in the community will continue.
