Helston Town Band has lost its third musical director in two years following the resignation of Darren Hendy.

Mr Hendy took up the baton in June this year as one of the most recognisable names in west of England banding, having first started playing as a child in 1979.

His arrival at Helston Town Band came in June, 18 months after he returned to banding, following a 12-year break whilst he focused on building his former Helston-based business, DS Hendy Ltd fruit and veg suppliers.

He took over from Derek Johnson, who resigned in January following seven months in the post.

In a statement released on Monday the band said: “It is with regret that Helston Town Band announce that their musical director, Mr Darren Hendy, has decided to leave the band.

“Mr Hendy stepped into the role earlier in the year and took the band through the busy summer season and an excellent Lismore Proms.

“The players, committee and supporters of the band would like to wish Mr Hendy the very best of luck for the future and thank him for the work he has put into the band.”

No reason has been given for Mr Hendy’s departure but it is understood that he and the band remain on good terms.

Helston Town Band plans to advertise for a replacement in the coming weeks, with the aim of appointing someone in the New Year.

It is not expected to affect the band’s forthcoming Christmas schedule of appearances.

Mr Hendy was the third musical director for the band in two years, with former musical director of ten years, John Hitchens, leaving after Flora Day 2013.
