Falmouth’s pensioners braved the cold on Monday morning as Trago Mills handed out a Christmas cash gift to their senior shoppers.

The annual Pensioners’ Pound Day saw senior management hand out more than £3,400 in £3 gifts to its older customers to start the store’s pensioners’ week, while staff got into the spirit by donning fancy dress.

Store manager Chris Clarke said: “It’s our way of helping a little bit.

“They also get the discount for the whole week, we expect that it’s going to be quite busy.”

There were about 20 pensioners queuing at 9.30am, when the gifts were handed out, which Chris thought could be explained by the cold weather.

She said: “It’s early and it’s cold. We’re going until 1pm, so it will pick up in a minute and we’ll have the queues.”

The pensioners were also given a ticket by Tina Catunarich, 84, who has been running the free raffle on pound day for 25 years.

She said: “It’s 25 years today I’ve been doing the raffle. I hope I make it for another year, you never know.”

Pensioners’ week runs from November 24 to 28, during which all senior shoppers get 20 per cent off purchases up to £30.
