Helston Museum will host a demonstration of a forgotten craft – lace making – today.

The Ladies Who Lace are group of local lace makers who will be showing the craft and giving the public a chance to have a go.

The free workshop is open to all ages and will run between 10am and 12.30pm. Visitors can try their hand at making some lace, or just watch as the Ladies Who Lace spin cobweb like patterns in front of their very eyes.

Before machinery took over the task of creating delicate designs in thread, lace was handmade using wooden or bone bobbins, and this tradition is kept alive by lace making groups all over the country.

The workshop coincides with the opening of the museum’s latest costume exhibition “Elegant Embellishments”, showcasing the many techniques used to decorate clothing and textiles. Beading, embroidery and lace all feature the elaborate the displays, from evening gowns to tea cosies.

Helston Museum is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am until 4pm, with free admission.
