A service will take place in Porthleven this Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of the death of Wing Commander Guy Gibson.

It will also remember his navigator Jim Warwick, who was also killed when their Mosquito plane crashed in the Netherlands towards the end of World War Two, in September 1944.

WC Gibson, whose family was from Porthleven, was one of Bomber Command’s most famous officers during the war and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership during the legendary Dambuster Raid of 1943.

This Friday (September 19) at 1pm Porthleven vicar Rev Peter Johnson will lead a short service next the memorial plaque outside Porthleven Institute clock tower.

The port’s mayor Rev Daniel Williams will be attending and a poppy wreath will be laid in memory of both men.
