Porthleven Town Band is to receive a grant from the town council to help them get to a prestigious band contest – but the exact amount depends on their own fundraising.

The band applied to the council ahead of its trip to the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Cheltenham.

Members hoped for money towards the overnight stay of its 32 players, with the trip costing just under £4,000.

At the start of the month the band was only £700 short, with one fundraising event to go.

It was agreed by town councillors that they would provide a grant to cover the shortfall at the end of the final fundraiser, up to a maximum of £500.

Mayor Daniel Williams said: “Personally I think they do an excellent job. They always turn up when we need them and don’t charge us.”
