Coverack celebrated a fun-filled “pirate and mermaid” themed day last week, when people of all ages arrived in the village wearing their best fancy dress costumes.

For the first time ever, businesses in the village and surrounding area also offered their support, to the appreciation of visitors.

Certificates were awarded to businesses and people who went the extra mile in dressing themselves or their shops in the seaside theme.

The judges making these difficult decisions were Bay Hotel guests Peter and Sandra Cybuch, who luckily had Terry Thompson and Vanessa Miller from the village to help them choose between all of the creative entrants.

Among the winners was the Harbour Lights Restaurant, which won the “best decorated business” due to an array of sea-inspired items such as nets and dolphin figures put up for all to admire at their entrance.

Also grabbing a prize was Kate Dagger, who won the “best dressed staff” category as she showed off her handmade mermaid costume.

Other winners included Holly Holmes as the land-dwelling “best dressed pirate”, and Ellen Newbold was the most colourful and “best dressed mermaid.”

Event co-ordinator Caroline Beadle said that nobody went home empty-handed, with all of the children that took part receiving a prize due to the combined generosity of Brenda’s, the Old Mill Shop and Elizabeth of Elizabeth’s Pasties.

Other activities included a treasure trail through the village, followed by sea-inspired craft making in St Peter’s Hall, where many children enjoyed making their own treasure shells, driftwood wind chimes and sun catchers.

Mrs Beadle said: “The event was only so successful due to the support of the local community and visitors.

“Thank you to those who helped with the craft activities and those who joined in the fun. We hope that we can do it all again next year.

“The aim was to have a fun day in the village and we certainly achieved that.”

Other businesses supporting the event included The Fat Mackerel, The Old Mill Shop and the Coverack Windsurfing Centre. Mrs Beadle gave a “special mention” to the Coverack childcare business Caring For Children In Their Own Homes, which had its own pirate crew and supported the activities with “great enthusiasm.”
