Fine weather brought out the crowds at the 39th St Martin Show on Saturday.

The venue, Trewince Barn, was much appreciated by the many visitors who, after admiring the exhibits, were able to enjoy wonderful cakes and tea, whilst seated on straw bales and listening to music from the Cober Valley Accordion Band.

Other attractions included a raffle, face painting and a bring-and-buy sales table.

After a few words of welcome by the chairman Brindley Hosken and president Peter Waterfield, the show was opened by Derek and Susanne Carter.

Derek is a well known local author and historian and has been involved with the horticultural society for many years. Derek has held many positions on the committee including chairman.

Susanne has also been involved with the horticultural society over the years including holding the post of secretary. She has been a keen exhibiter at the show for over 30 years.

Show entries, including vegetables, flowers, crafts, home produce, art and photography, were of the usual high standard with many entries from new exhibitors, especially in the children's classes, where organisers said the entry was even higher than last year's record.

Special mention goes to Ruth Hosken for winning the Parish Hall Cup for best exhibit in show and Loretta Ruse for winning the St Martin Horticultural Shield for most points in show.

John Nicholls was a popular local winner, taking the Beeslee Bowl for most points in the confined section, the Seymour Cooke Cup for most points in the confined vegetable section and the Thurston Cup for best exhibit in the flower section.

At the end of the afternoon, the show chairman Brindley Hosken thanked Mr and Mrs Alston for the use of their barn and also Derek and Susanne Carter for opening the show and presenting the special prizes to the winners.

He went on to say that the show took a lot of planning and organisation and thanked all the many people involved its running, as well as the Cober Valley Band for providing two hours of entertainment.

During the afternoon money was raised for this year's charities, The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Turn to Starboard.
