Porthleven Lifeboat Day was cancelled for the first time in nearly 40 years on Sunday.

Strongly gusting wind, as a result of the tail end of Hurricane Bertha hitting the UK, meant organisers were forced into the decision, after the marquee began to move and gazebos started to collapse, causing some damage.

With concerns there could be a risk of people becoming injured, those in charge were left with “no alternative.”

Stalls on Breageside were not so affected and the holders of those stayed in position all day.

The raffle also took place at the planned time, with a list of winners posted on the gate as usual.

Gill Moore, has now stood down as Porthleven RNLI chairman and secretary, and Jean Ashton as Lifeboat Day secretary, after ten years in these committee positions.

A presentation was made to each of them of a framed picture of the Penlee Lifeboat the Ivan Ellen, and signed by members of the lifeboat crew.

Jean Howard, from the RNLI, said: “A lot of people did come to Porthleven, including many who had not heard the event had been cancelled, particularly in the afternoon.

“By this time, although still windy the sun shone making it a most pleasant time to be in Porthleven, always a popular place with visitors.

“We will continue to play our part in raising funds for the RNLI to help saves lives at sea and will be there next year on August 9 when we hope the weather will be kinder to us.”
