Can you help tell story of war dead on Helston's memorial?
4:00pm Monday 30th June 2014 in Cornwall
Relatives of war heroes named on the Helston war memorial are being sought so that every serviceman can be recognised at this year’s centenary commemoration of World War One.
Of the 59 names inscribed on the monument, the town has information, of varying levels, on 53 of them.
However, there are still six for whom they know nothing – and would like anyone who knows anything about these men to come forward, so that all can be remembered.
The names are: FC Angove, Charles H Newman, Leslie Richards, EH Smith, Leslie Stephens and George White.
Anyone with information about these men is asked to contact the Helston Museum World War One research group, which is working in conjunction with the town council.
Martine Knight, who is heading up the research group, said: “If we can find any relatives so much the better as they may have photos or artefacts that we could borrow/copy for the exhibition.”
An exhibition is being launched in the museum at 10am on Monday, August 4, honouring the town’s fallen.
While there is a degree of information about the remaining 53 names, Mrs Knight would still like to speak to any relatives she has not yet contacted, as the more the group knows about the men the better the tribute can be.
Mrs Knight can be contacted on 01326 564710.
