A supermarket in Porthleven is helping the town band buy items on its wish list thanks to a £1,500 donation.

The money was music to band members’ ears when it was presented on Sunday by representatives of Costcutter.

Band musical director Tom Bassett said: “Thank you so much to Costcutter for the £1,500 donation. It's fantastic that a local shop which is in the heart of the village has supported the band, which also practice in the heart of the village.

“Over the years we have been very impressed with the amount of support we get from within the community and this is a great example of that.”

Presenting the cheque shortly after the band finished performing outside the Harbour Inn was Andy Pengelly from Costcutter Porthleven.

He said: “It gives us great pleasure to present this cheque to Porthleven Town Band for all the great work they do within the Porthleven community.”

Band chairman Sally Martyn confirmed that the money would be used to buy a trombone, which would be slightly smaller than usual in order to develop younger, talented players, but of the same calibre as those used by the senior band.

She said: “We want to be able to offer the younger players a |better quality instrument but currently our trombones are all too heavy for the younger players to manage.”

Any remaining money will be used to replace the heaters in the band room.

The money was donated under the Costcutter Local Pride Initiative (Making A Difference Locally Limited), which gives money to charities contributing substantially to the community.
