Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club ‘tore up the rule book’ to hold a fun regatta at the weekend.

Crews from Devoran, Falmouth, Flushing and Mylor, Helford, Nankersey, Penryn and Truro took part in the races, having donned fancy dress for the occasion.

Organiser Dave Matthews said: “It went very well, the feedback was good. Flushing and Mylor hasn’t had a regatta for a few years and we decided to do things a bit differently.”

To add an element of spectacle to the event, there were several short sprint races of three or four minutes, between Flushing Sailing Club quay and Kiln Quay, and it was also decided that each boat should contain a pilot as well as the crew.

Dave said: “It’s unheard of in the gig rowing world, but we wanted to tear up the rule book and do something different.

“It was partly to celebrate the history of the pilot gig, but it didn’t quite come off because they went out and found the smallest pilots possible, so it mostly ended up being juniors.”
