A former Mullion DJ who raised £2,510 for two organisations quite literally close to her heart has now presented the proceeds.

Kay Harvey, who suffered a heart attack three years ago, handed over the money to the cardiac unit of the Royal Cornwall Hospital and the British Heart Foundation, with the presentation taking place at the charity’s Helston store.

The money was raised through the Heart:Beats Festival she organised with friend Graham Baumbach, which drew a crowd of hundreds to the Blue Anchor as many bands performed for free and travelled from throughout the UK.

Kay described the reaction to the cause as “incredible”, saying: “The whole thing is amazing. I never, ever expected it to be so successful.

“I had no idea what we wanted to raise and it’s an awesome amount. It was incredible. I’m just blown away by it all.”

The money donated will have a real effect on the lives of those within the Cornwall area, providing more funding for cardiac nurses and other vital services, with even the British Heart Foundation portion of the funds staying in the Helston area.

A follow up event is not on the cards for next year, however, although Kay has not ruled out a return totally.

“Everyone asked if I’ll do it next year – no way! It took seven and a half month’s planning. But never say never, we may still do it again; maybe the year after. Already bands have come forward wanting to do it,” she said.

Kay thanked the Packet for its help, saying: “I am really appreciative of the support from the Packet in getting the word out.”
