WORK is to start soon on a new block of retirement homes which are to be built on the site of the Admiral Nelson pub next to Falmouth Docks.

The pub in Bar Road had been empty for eight years when it was eventually demolished in 2011, but since then the site has lain dormant as developers fought to win planning permission.

That was granted on appeal and the final permission for 46 “retirement living apartments” has now been granted with McCarthy & Stone announced as the site’s developer.

The one and two-bedroom privately owned apartments will be available to people aged 60 and above.

Jacqui Meenan, sales and marketing director for McCarthy & Stone, said: “Everything we do is built around a belief that later life can be rich, rewarding and fulfilling, which is why we’re thrilled to be bringing a new offering to the |town.

“As specialists in retirement living, we understand what our customers want – a low maintenance property offering independence and security, to help get the most out of later life.”

The development will include a shared lounge, guest suite, laundry room and a lift. A house manager will ensure the smooth running of the development and a security entrance system plus 24-hour emergency call points provide peace of mind for both homeowners and their families. All properties will be low maintenance and energy efficient.
