Mawnan family that has battled brain illness raises £1,100 for charity
12:00pm Monday 7th April 2014 in Cornwall
A family which has battled with illnesses affecting the brain raised £1,100 on Saturday for the Brain Research Trust.
David Trewin from Mawnan Smith, who lost his mother to a brain aneurysm last year and whose sister has battled aneurysms as well as a tumour on her pituitary, collected the money as part of his fundraising campaign ahead of a London Marathon attempt this month.
David said: “Running the marathon came about last year after my mum passed away. Before she died I said I was looking to do it, and she virtually fell out of her chair laughing. So I thought I’d try to make it happen.”
The trust has been a cause close to David’s heart since his sister fell ill two years ago and doctors discovered five brain aneurysms; she is undergoing a trial procedure from Malta, and has undergone eight operations with her most serious one due in April.
David thanked everyone who had attended and supported the table top sale, which was aided with donations by local businesses including gift hampers and a spa day. The event had a tombola, raffle, name the teddy, refreshments, and a craft table for children to create Mothering Sunday cards and gifts.
David said: “It started out as a coffee afternoon and something for the children, and it’s got much bigger than we thought, so it’s very good.”
The sale marked two weeks until David runs the marathon on April 13. Anyone wishing to donate can visit justgiving.com/David-Trewin.
