A van driver had a 'miraculous' escape yesterday when a large tree came crashing down on the main road between Helston and the Lizard.

The A3083 main Lizard road is still closed in both directions, with the closure affecting traffic travelling between Helston and Lizard. A diversion is in place.

Firefighters were called just before 4.30pm on Monday afternoon after a small van was hit by the falling tree near Cury Cross Lanes, Mullion.

A fire service spokesman said that the van was being driven at the time and it was "a miracle that the vans occupant was not injured".

Adding: "Fortunately when the tree fell large branches came down around the main body of the van leaving the driver unharmed."

Due to the size of the tree the A3038 has been blocked and remains closed whilst the tree is removed, the van has been left in situ.

The tree is so large that it has also been left in place vernight and will be removed on Tuesday morning, it is expected that it will take six hours to cut up and re-open the road.
