Mullion Harbour remains in “remarkably sound condition” despite taking a battering in the recent storms, according to the National Trust.

Writing on its Facebook page the trust said that this was “despite the extreme pounding the harbour received during the series of storms, and a substantial amount of damage in the process.”

The main, western breakwater had structural damage to the parapet wall but suffered mainly “cosmetic” damage. Trust rangers and volunteers had so far managed to salvage around half of the 6,000 plus granite paving setts that had been washed into the harbour.

The southern breakwater, however, had suffered “significantly worse damage” as it was “never built to the same standard as the main western breakwater.”

A full report from the engineers is still coming, but the estimated cost of repairs is likely to be in excess of £250,000.

Subject to funding the trust hopes to start work on repairs to the western breakwater within the next few weeks. But any repairs to the southern breakwater are dependent upon the results of the engineers’ report and subject to listed building consent.
